{"id":1033,"date":"2019-02-21T16:59:48","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T16:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dose-engineering.com\/?p=1033"},"modified":"2019-02-21T16:59:48","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T16:59:48","slug":"what-does-new-yorks-commitment-to-clean-energy-mean-for-your-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dose-engineering.com\/2025\/what-does-new-yorks-commitment-to-clean-energy-mean-for-your-business\/","title":{"rendered":"What does New York&#8217;s commitment to clean energy mean for your business?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A couple of months ago, New York\u2019s Governor Cuomo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/new-york-gov-cuomo-pledges-100-carbon-free-electricity-by-2040\/544587\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">issued a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the state would go 100% carbon-free energy by 2040. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This statement follows on the heels of approval by the New York Public Service Commission to implement <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/assets.documentcloud.org\/documents\/5633170\/Phase-3-CES.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the third stag<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its Clean Energy Standard (CES). Both are part of the state\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rev.ny.gov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reforming the Energy Vision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which sets as goals that by 2030 the state will see a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels, with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70% of electricity coming from renewable sources like wind, solar, and hydro. They also list as a goal a 600 trillion Btu increase in statewide energy efficiency. By 2080, the plan envisions the State will see an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December 2018, the state\u2019s Power Authority (NYPA) announced that it was investing $250 million in updating its electric grid to be more flexible to incorporate storage of electricity coming from renewable sources. NYPA already produces most of its electricity (70 percent) from hydropower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the New York Public Service Commission has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-cuomo-announces-dramatic-increase-energy-efficiency-and-energy-storage-targets-combat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set ambitious energy storage goals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 1,500 MW by 2025 and 3,000 MW by 2030. It also sets a target for energy efficiency for the state&#8217;s investor-owned utilities to double utility energy efficiency reductions by 2025. These reductions will come in part from retiring any combustion turbine peaking units in New York City and Long Island that were built before 1990.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what does all this mean for you and your business? For one thing, the state will be making regulatory changes to utility rates and carbon values. Commercial and industry players <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should expect to see incentives for switching to renewable offerings by utilities, and for using electricity during off-peak times. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there are the dozens of state and federal incentives available to businesses looking to transition to clean energy. Through the state\u2019s \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyserda.ny.gov\/All-Programs\/Programs\/Ground-Source-Heat-Pump-Rebate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ground source heat pump rebate program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for example, a building can get a rebate of up to $500,000 for installing a pump. Another program will help subsidize the installation of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyserda.ny.gov\/All-Programs\/Programs\/Real-Time-Energy-Management\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real-time energy management system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1035\" style=\"width: 977px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1035\" class=\"wp-image-1035 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/dose-engineering.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NY-clean-energy-1024x531.png\" alt=\"new york clean energy funding\" width=\"967\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dose-engineering.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NY-clean-energy-1024x531.png 1024w, https:\/\/dose-engineering.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NY-clean-energy-600x311.png 600w, https:\/\/dose-engineering.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NY-clean-energy-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/dose-engineering.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NY-clean-energy-768x398.png 768w, https:\/\/dose-engineering.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NY-clean-energy-370x192.png 370w, https:\/\/dose-engineering.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NY-clean-energy-1200x622.png 1200w, https:\/\/dose-engineering.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NY-clean-energy-360x187.png 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 967px) 100vw, 967px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1035\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From the 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyserda.ny.gov\/About\/Publications\/New-York-Clean-Energy-Industry-Report\">NY Clean Energy Industry Report<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/greenbank.ny.gov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NY Green Bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commercial real estate owners can get financing to purchase and install <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.greenbank.ny.gov\/CORE_Solicitation_Detail_Page?SolicitationId=a0rt0000000QnyNAAS\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cenergy efficiency and\/or renewable energy assets.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For data centers looking to invest in energy efficiency equipment and productivity improvements, there\u2019s the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyserda.ny.gov\/All-Programs\/Programs\/IPE-Data-Centers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industrial and Process Efficiency (IPE) program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which offers performance-based incentives to offset costs.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incentives are calculated from the annual kilowatt-hour savings that result from implementing energy efficiency measures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s not just infrastructure: There\u2019s a program that supports companies in hiring a full-time <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyserda.ny.gov\/All-Programs\/Programs\/On-Site-Energy-Manager\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On-site Energy Manager<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and another to encourage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.nyserda.ny.gov\/CORE_Solicitation_Detail_Page?SolicitationId=a0rt000000MdOBsAAN\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On-the-Job Training for Energy Efficiency and Clean Technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsireusa.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">search this database<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a comprehensive list for New York and other states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York is joining a trend toward 100% renewable energy seen in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2019\/01\/07\/a-year-of-100-for-local-renewable-energy-in-2018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other states across the nation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Storage target numbers show this commitment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Jersey wants to see 2,000 MW by 2030; California\u2019s target is 1,300 MW by 2020; and Massachusetts is looking to dramatically increase the state&#8217;s existing 200 MWh storage target to 2,000 MW by 2025. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of months ago, New York\u2019s Governor Cuomo issued a statement that the state would go 100% carbon-free energy by 2040.
